Written by Loretta Fogarty.
When gold was discovered in 1858 along the Thompson and Fraser rivers in the British territory of New Caledonia, now British Columbia, Canada, an influx of miners created the need for the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road over some of the most difficult terrain in the world, to provide access for freight wagons and pack trains taking people and supplies to the gold fields of Barkerville. Interspersed along the 1,050-kilometre (650 mile) Cariboo Wagon Road were roadhouses providing shelter, food, and provisions for the travellers. This book presents the history of Cottonwood House Historic Site, one of the last roadhouses still standing.
